Santiago, Chile

On our last day, most of us had late night flights, so Viking arranged a short Santiago city tour for us after we had to check out of our rooms. Last night we stayed at the Ritz-Carleton in downtown Santiago.

We had a smooth flight home with a sort layover in Dallas. Of course our luggage made it to Chicago. One thing we'll do differently on future trips is to split our clothes between the suitcases. If one bag makes it, at least we'll have something to wear. If both get lost, oh well, we've learned that you can get by as long as there's a daily laundry available!

National Museum of Fine Arts

The Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts is one of the major centers for Chilean art and for broader South American art.

Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral and the Plaza de Armas

Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Santiago de Chile, currently Celestino Aós Braco, and the center of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile.

The Plaza de Armas is the main square of Santiago.

Pedro de Valdivia statue

Pedro de Valdivia Pedro Gutiérrez de Valdivia was a Spanish conquistador and the first royal governor of Chile in 1540.

Many bronze maps were on display in the plaza.

Palacio de La Moneda

The building behind the red tent is the Palacio de La Moneda, which is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. They were getting ready for an outdoor concert in the park.
